Many of my IBM colleagues would know that I'm a passionate Collingwood fan. I'm also a lady who lunches a lot but I'm a terrible cook and hopeless gardener. I spend a lot of time on cryptic crosswords, sudoku and Wordle but too little time reading books. However, in retirement, I took on a family history project to load a lot of my late father's family photos and records onto ancestry.com. I then started to research my late mother's family history and discovered three convicts amongst her ancestors. This has become my passion with six trips to Tasmania in recent years to trace their movements and further generations from 1826 onwards. I completed a Diploma in Family History with UTAS last year and now have much work ahead to record that history for the younger generation's to follow.

I’m also the family genealogist. One side of my family (Mum’s) is extensively documented because they were early colonists, explorers, pastoralists and sometimes squatters! They left footprints wherever they went. The other side, Dad’s, they were also colonists, if a little later, then three generations of miners. Salt of the earth really…but they left little trace. I’ve never really understood how Mum and Dad ever got together. ..😂 !!

Tasmanian records appear to be much more extensive than others but maybe that reflects the misdeeds of my ancestors. You must be careful of what you ask for once you start digging up the past!!!
