Dear Friends,
In Memoriam – NSW
Dear Friends,

Long time IBMer Keith Nott passed away last week. He was aged 86. He leaves behind his children Robyn and Michael, their partners, and 4 beloved grandchildren.
Keith studied Accountancy and worked for his father’s wholesale / importing business before joining IBM in the Services Bureau in Palmer Street, Sydney in 1964. He then moved into a Marketing role in the General Systems Division where he had a territory at one stage of ‘everything north and west of Parramatta’. Keith was a successful as a Salesman and later as a Sales Manager. He attained Hundred Percent Club for every year that he was on quota – 15 years! He also received a couple of Golden Circle awards. Lots of fun must have been had at Branch meetings in those days. There are stories of him and colleagues dressing up as the Village People and singing for the team!
With his experience in midrange systems, IBM moved Keith with his family to Atlanta GA, USA for 2 years in the early 1980’s where he managed a team of ex-pat Aussies, Canadians and British who were adapting mid range software from being US centric to be sold in those countries. On his return to Australia he joined the APC to work for Frank Barr-David and with long time colleagues Ron Carr, Ian Neale and Len Norman.
Keith’s final role at IBM was to set up the Business Recovery Services team in 1989, starting with a business case and lots of contacts in mid range customers, and leaving a legacy of a very successful IBM business.
Keith retired in 1996, after 32 years at IBM. He and his beloved wife Jenny enjoyed a great retirement until Jenny passed away in 2013. Keith has been living a good life of volunteering, Probus, church and family since then. He was a kind and generous man who was extremely good at talking to everyone. He will be greatly missed.
A Service of Thanksgiving will be held for Keith:
Date: Thursday 25th June
Venue: St James Anglican church, King St, Turramurra

We are saddened to advise you of the passing of Ken Symington some weeks ago, after losing a protracted battle with cancer.
This notification was obtained from LinkedIn and no further details are available to us, however as many of you may have known or worked with Ken we felt the notification appropriate.
John died on the 21st of November.
John Mason was an Anglo Indian and had 3 daughters in India He felt they wouldn’t have much of a future there hence the decision to move to Australia, leaving a quite an elegant life behind and beginning again. They then had a son here and now have a number of grandchildren, so quite a family.
John and his family arrived in the late 50s with John joining IBM in the Office Products Division to sell Typewriters then Word Processing Systems, later becoming a manager until retirement. John’s faith saw him often assisting the vicar in his church, becoming popular as the church was often crowded during the service.
It’s so sad we’ve lost another IBMer.
It is with sadness that we have been advised of the passing of Werner on the 23rd of November at Corlette, Nelson Bay.
Vale David Birchall-Hunt (1939-2025)
Dave joined the PMG in the January intake of ‘The 56er’. He remained in the Telephony Group,
but after having spent some years in ‘Siberia’ (PMG Sydenham Workshops) in Sydney,
he left to join IBM, in 1962 as a Customer Engineer.
His first couple of years with IBM were spent working in Sydney,
then after being trained on the 1440 he transferred to Adelaide to specialise on Unit Record and other GS equipment.
He was respected by both his colleagues and customers, and it earned him a IBM CE Service Award.
Retiring from IBM after 30 plus years, he chose to remain in Adelaide.
He was in poor health in his final years, finally dying on the 17th June 2025, aged 85.
His funeral was on the 8th July 2025 leaving his wife, Carol, and family to mourn his passing.

The Booker family would like to share that Allan Booker—an IBM Quarter Century Club member and proud alumnus of more than 35 years (1969-2004) passed away peacefully on 4th May 2025.
One of Allan’s final wishes was that news of his passing be shared with the IBM alumni community, particularly his former colleagues across Australia. IBM has been woven into the fabric of our family story, beginning with Allan meeting his wife of 52 years, Mary, at the office.
Since the company’s earliest days in Australia, a member of the Booker family has worked at IBM for more than half its history—his daughter, Karen, proudly continues that legacy today.
Allan remained deeply proud of the projects he led both in Australia and abroad, often reflecting on the exceptional calibre of his colleagues and their shared dedication to IBM and its mission.

Bill Ashton, a long-time member of IBM’s Quarter Century Club, passed away in Queensland on 18th June 2025. Bill’s wife Vivienne, his son Andrew and daughters Sarah & Kate wish to thank Bill’s old friends and former colleagues for their kind thoughts and messages of condolences. They wish to share Bill’s recollections of his time with IBM:
In July 1959, Bill embarked on his career with IBM, transitioning from his previous role as an electrician. This marked a significant change, requiring him to don a collar and tie for the first time.
On the 20th of July 1959, Bill experienced his inaugural plane ride to Sydney, where he undertook six weeks of training with IBM. During this period, he trained alongside two colleagues, Peter Wimpy, who sadly passed away shortly thereafter, and Tony Millard, a local who remained with IBM for many years.
Upon returning to Melbourne, Bill began his role as a customer engineer, a position he held for approximately two and a half years. In this capacity, he collaborated closely with the sales department, under the leadership of Ken Freeman, the Tasmanian marketing manager. His career then saw him return to the mainland, where he held various positions in Melbourne.
Bill’s journey continued with a transfer to Sydney, where he worked at the Lidcombe office as a technical support instructor for about two years. He then transitioned into the Sydney field operations as a people manager, overseeing individuals such as Barry Anderson, Barry Southeren, and Paul Mapstone.
In 1971, Bill was sent to Auckland for six months to address customer support challenges. Upon returning to Sydney, he was asked to relocate to Melbourne in 1972 to assume the role of Victorian CE manager. By 1976, he was back in Sydney, working in the Kent Street office for four years.
An opportunity arose for an assignment in the USA, which Bill and his family embraced, leading them to Connecticut for approximately four years. During this time, he worked in White Plains and Tarrytown as a Planning Manager. Returning to Sydney in late 1983, Bill worked in Walker Street, North Sydney, before moving to Cumberland Forest as an HR manager.
In 1988, he was assigned to Hong Kong as an Asia Pacific HR manager, a dual assignment alongside Viv, who worked in Office Services and Marketing Events management for Asia Pacific. In 1991, Bill returned to Sydney and took on the role of director with Lexmark, collaborating with Peter O’Meara to establish Lexmark in Australia. He retired from Lexmark in 1998, concluding a remarkable 39-year career with IBM and Lexmark.
These years were among the most fulfilling of his life, spent working alongside many extraordinary individuals.
Many former IBMers will have known Colin Grainger, or "Col" to his many colleagues and friends, from his long career in IBMA Finance, the NDM and the Quarter Century Club.
After a long healthy and happy retirement, Col passed away just before Christmas 2024. He was only a few months shy of his 90th birthday. Col is survived by his wife Helen, son Peter, daughter Kathryn, 5 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
To quote from the song played at his funeral service, "I did it my way". That was Col.
Thank you to the many people who have shared with us their memories of their time with him.

We are sad to announce the passing of long time IBM team member Harold Potts on January 19, 2025.
Harold retired in 2007 after an illustrious 40 year career with IBM having joined the organisation in
the late 1960s as an Office Products Administration Manager. He rose to leadership roles
over the years including Supply and Inventory Manager Australia before leading up to 100
staff as Global Services Finances Manager Australian Accounts before taking on his final
position of Global Services Technical Services Finance Manager. In 1985 Harry, his wife
Moya and children Alison, Christopher and Sarah moved to Tokyo for two years with IBM at
the height of the company’s Japanese presence. They welcomed their child Emily while
living there. Harry treasured his time at IBM and always enjoyed the innovative and
collaborative environment and had many cherished friends over his career there. He will be
very missed by his loving family and friends.

Sorry to inform all members, via communication from Jim Templeton, that it is with sadness we have to report the death of Don McDonald, who passed away on 12th March.
Don had been in care for a while.
He was a great person to work with, spending his later IBM years working at the Albury-Wodonga Customer Service Office. He is fondly remembered for his good humour, friendliness and willingness to help anyone at anytime.
Don’s sister Heather has advised Jim the the funeral will be held on Friday 24th March at Wodonga Baptist Church, 154 Melrose Drive, Wodonga at 2.00pm.
We will also ensure this is posted to the relevant Facebook pages for our group.

Many of our Victorian Members will be sad to hear that Bob Galloway, who gave many years of service to IBM in Victoria, passed away in hospital on Wednesday last (8 June). He was resident in Sydney and his funeral is to be held on Monday 20 June at 10.00 am at Northern Suburbs Crematorium North Ryde in the South Chapel. Our thoughts and sympathies are with his wife Audrey and their family.

Our thanks to Jules for this kind offer.
Bob’s wife, Audrey has sent out a message for all of Bob’s colleagues and friends:

With great sadness, the Quarter Century Club NSW Incorporated advises members of the passing of one of our most respected members.
Hilton McKenna joined IBM in October of 1964. It was obvious from the beginning that he would be an IBM’er who would rise rapidly through the ranks. He quickly earned the respect of his peers and of IBM customers through his dedication to providing excellence in service.
Hilton’s talents were quickly recognised and many promotions ensued. He was offered and undertook positions in various IBM locations and in different parts of the business. He always presented with a wry sense of humour and a ready smile. But, importantly, he got the job done and did it right and no challenge was too difficult to accept.
In later life, Hilton had a long illness and was cared for beautifully at home by his loving wife, Anne. His passing at the age of 73 closes the chapter on this remarkable individual who did so much for IBM and his fellow IBM’ers.
A service was held at the Camellia Chapel at Macquarie Park on Tuesday 23 July.
Published on behalf of the Quarter Century Club Incorporated.
